What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy is an innovative, non-surgical and non-invasive procedure that has gained widespread popularity. Shockwave therapy is used to treat a variety of ailments and it is recommended for its fast pain relief and mobility restoration.
To perform the treatment – the area is examined and then pulsated by our therapist. Gel is then applied to the area. The gel is necessary to transfer the shockwaves through the specific area of concern. The shockwave applicator is then placed on the skin and the treatment is administered. Although you may report discomfort, this is mostly a pain free treatment and you will see and feel the results instantly.
A few follow-up treatments, over several weeks, are usually needed to ensure the therapy makes a lasting impact.
How does Shockwave Therapy work?
The area requiring therapy is treated with a series of continuous high frequency “shocks”. These shocks are physical in nature and no electricity is involved. The shock triggers an inflammatory response in your body which allows it to naturally increase metabolic activity in the affected tissue. This allows the tissue to heal much faster than usual without the need for medication or surgery.
What conditions can be treated using Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy can be used in most places where connective tissue meets the bone. Specifically, the following ailments can be treated by shockwave therapy.
- Chronic tendinopathy
